Sorry for the lack of posts lately, been busy and not very motivated (which isn't a good combination). Last week I did manage to see (not necessarily in this order): Exodus, Goatwhore, Warbringer, Every Time I Die, From First to Last, August Burns Red, Human Abstract, and another one I can't remember. The first three were one show and the rest were at another. To complete the hat trick, this weekend I will be seeing Fu Manchu (!!), ASG, and Savoiurs.

I don't know a lot about these guys other than they fancy some odd time signatures.

I think that monkey3 lean a bit in the prog direction, but they are all stellar musicians nonetheless. Their site has some good verbage:

Monkey3 started during the year 2001 as a musicians' community dedicated to jam-sessions. The overall intonations of this improvisations, due to everybody's influences, was in a stoner-rock vibe. Attracted by this experience, the band was finally formed as a quartet, Picasso - Bass, Walter - Drums, Boris - Guitar and Mister M. - Sampler & Keys, and decided to create its own musical world.

Leave it to a bunch of studio geeks to make something really cool like this. I think that if Tool and Pink Floyd had a love child, it would be monkey3. I would really like to know how the kick drum head works.

Ministry, Fu Manchu, Every Time I Die, ASG, Saviours, Exodus and some assorted openers. I think that I am the most excited about the Fu Manchu show. It is at the BLVD here in Spokane. It is on a Sunday, so the bar area of this all ages show might be a little sparser people-wise.

These guys are my new heroes. Not just anyone can pull off cymbal chokes by both guitarists and the bass player. Their live shows look like fun.

Quite the pedigree on these guys. From Wikipedia:

The band had its beginnings in 2003 when guitarist and singer Daniel Davies, son of Dave Davies of The Kinks, met bassist Rich Mullins of Karma to Burn in a Hollywood grocery store; at the time Mullins was having drug problems and was homeless. Within a week, the two were friends, living in an apartment together, often going on drinking or crack binges[1]. Over the next 7 months they spent time in drug rehabilitation and halfway houses.

In November of 2004, they went to the Scene Bar in Glendale, California to see a band called Hours and Minutes with drummer Brad Hargreaves of Third Eye Blind fame (unbeknownst to the band at the time). Daniel and Rich asked Brad to have a jam. Around that time Third Eye Blind was asked to play as The Kinks on the show American Dreams. Brad was intrigued with the fact that Davies was son of the Kinks' real-life lead guitarist, and the two became friends and continued jamming under the name of Year Long Disaster. They eventually started gigging locally in Los Angeles and caught the eye of Marc Needham, producer for The Killers. They then recorded an EP and began touring nationwide, increasing in popularity. In 2007 they signed a recording contract with Volcom Entertainment and release their debut full length album. The self title release hit the stores on October 9th 2007. The band is managed be Sebastian Robertson son of Robbie Robertson of The Band. They were named one of the best new bands for 2008 in the artists to watch feature in Rolling Stone Magazine. They most recently won the Yahoo! User's Choice for the month of December 2007.

I think that I appreciate things more if I know how they are made. That's true of most things for me; motorcycles, buildings, hell, even widgets on that How it's Made show. This is no different. Butch Vig has some great insight on the recording process behind Nirvana's Nevermind album. (They even talk to the kid that was the "Nirvana baby" for the album art.)

This video comes in at about an hour and a half, so go get yourself a frosty beverage and make some popcorn. It brought back tons of memories from when that album came out. Damn, I feel old.

These guys have quite the resume. I was going to blab some about it, but Wiki has it best:
Winnebago Deal is a rock music band from Oxford, United Kingdom. It started life as a four piece band in 1999 at Bartholomew School, in Eynsham, though two of the original members left shortly after. Winnebago currently consists of two Bens, Ben Perrier (vocals, guitar) and Ben Thomas (drums).

Winnebago Deal generated strong support from local youth center gigs and many appearances at Oxford's Zodiac club, eventually supporting Fugazi at London's Forum; this led to their first record, the Plata O Plomo EP in 2003. They were nominated for the Kerrang Award's 'Best British Newcomer' that year. Soon after, the band signed a recording contract with Double Dragon Music, and produced their debut album Dead Gone with Jack Endino, released in September 2004. Plata O Plomo was reissued in Australia, with an expanded track listing.

The "two Bens" then went on to play as Mondo Generator with Nick Oliveri, former Queens of the Stone Age bassist/vocalist. As well as playing Mondo Generator gigs, they still toured as Winnebago Deal and even supported Mondo Generator, earing them the moniker "Winnebago Generator" from fans. Having entered Dave Grohl's studio to record the next Mondo Generator Album, it was announced in July 2006 that they had left the band for "undisclosed reasons".

In that same month they released their latest album Flight Of The Raven. It was produced by Jack Endino, producer of the first Nirvana album Bleach. The album features many other artists including band partner Nick Oliveri and was cited as the sixth best album in 2006 by Kerrang! writer Raziq Rauf. In 2007 the Bens formed a new band called The Dresdens.

Spaced-out mega heavy stoner groove band from Wollongong whose music has drawn comfortable comparisons with the likes of Black Sabbath and Hawkwind. Thumlock formed in 1995, originally as a three piece of Eshman, Lough and Stokes. I saw Priestess a few months ago opening for Mastodon. As far as I am concerned, these guys should have been headlining. Absolutely stellar show. It's hard to see in this video, but the drummer plays a really cool clear and red swirled kit.

These guys are fucking nuts. Lightning Bolt are your gawds. Holy shit, that drummer is crazy. How he doesn't just fall over, I don't know. It is hard to hear at first, but if you relax a bit, you can pick out a beat.

Songza is a cool site that lets you search for and play songs right in your browser. I think that all of the audio comes from Youtube videos. Inside the left click pop up menu, you have the option to add the song to a playlist (I don't know if there is an option for more than one). Sharing options in that same menu include linking, embedding, emailing and watching it on Youtube. You also have the option to rate the recording as thumbs up or thumbs down. On the right side of the screen there are links to a Google search page for Discography and Buy for the track that is currently playing. The audio seems to be what you would expect from Youtube videos; not always great, not always horrible, but not bad for being free.
