Squarepusher

God damn, this is a creepy video.

Squarepusher - Come On My Selector

Squarepusher, aka Tom Jenkinson on BBC2's "The Culture Show"

Hermano

John Garcia of Kyuss fame's sort-of-new gig, Hermano.

Dozer

Ah, Dozer. This song suits my mood just fine right about now. Turn it up. No, louder.

You know, with all of the bands from Sweden I've been posting, you'd think that I was Swedish. Well, I do have an uncle that deserted the army and ended up living there for about 15 years. Does that count?

Dozer - From Fire Fell

Goon Moon

From the Suicide Squeeze site: The band features Twiggy Ramirez of Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails, Zach Hill of HELLA, and Chris Goss from Masters of Reality, and concocts a startling bitch’s brew of outsider prog experimentalism and thrown back and twisted stoner jams in the tradition of no one.

Goon Moon - The Rest Of My Life

Emilie Simon

Wow. This is weird. Emilie is out there. This is a creepy little number.

Emile Simon - Desert

Sunday Morning Mellow Beats

Whether Sunday starts your week or ends your weekend, it's always a good day for some mellow music. Here are a couple of great internet radio stations for just such a day.

Russian Circles

Great band, smokin' drummer. The whole song is great, but the last 45 seconds just kicks my ass. These guys are a bit more proggy than I normally lean, but damn, they're great. I bet the Tool crowd just stood there and stared when they opened.

Russian Circles - Death Rides a Horse

Orange Goblin

Orange Goblin - Some You Win, Some You Lose

Big Elf

Described as the DNA of The Beatles, Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd combined into one group. Big Elf are something, alright.

Big Elf - Madhatter

Doominion

Doominion is a great primer for Doom and Stoner rock. They have a series of podcasts that look to provide a pretty comprehensive history of what we currently call Doom and Stoner rock, along with some of the offshoot genres. Some of the podcasts have English and Spanish options, too. Give them a listen.

Collective Perception

This looks to be pretty cool.

Collective Perception is an excerpt of SpaceCollective.org, a soon to be released, invite only information exchange dedicated to the future of everything.

SpaceCollective is about to go into public beta and is issuing a limited amount of exclusive beta generation invites now.

Two Piece Bands

The Lightning Bolt post from the other day got me thinking about two piece bands. Here are a few.

Big Business - Start Your Digging

Two Gallants - Despite What You've Been Told

Death From Above 1979 - Romantic Rights

Jucifer - Pontius of Palia

Witchcraft

I have heard it said that these guys were "born out of time". Close your eyes and listen; you'd swear that it was the late 1960's.

Witchcraft - Chylde of Fire

The Sword

A couple of great songs from The Sword.
The Sword - Winter's Wolves

The Sword - Iron Swan (live)

Priestess

I saw Priestess a few months ago opening for Mastodon. As far as I am concerned, these guys should have been headlining. Absolutely stellar show. It's hard to see in this video, but the drummer plays a really cool clear and red swirled kit.

Priestess - Lay Down

The Shock Doctrine Short Film

Sceeeeery.

Lightning Bolt

These guys are fucking nuts. Lightning Bolt are your gawds. Holy shit, that drummer is crazy. How he doesn't just fall over, I don't know. It is hard to hear at first, but if you relax a bit, you can pick out a beat.

Lightning Bolt - The Power Of Salad And Milkshakes

Generous Maria

Sweden seems to be the hotbed of good Stoner/Guitar rock lately. Add Generous Maria to the list. The video is for the song Ripe, from their October 2007 release Electricism.

Generous Maria - Ripe

High on Fire

...Immaculately pretty um, intense...
Godammit I love these guys. High on Fire kick much arse. This is some tough shit.

High on Fire - Face of Oblivion

Early Man

Ok, Sabbath fans, I give unto you Early Man. Any time you mix rock with a demolition derby, you know it's going to be great.

Early Man - Death is the Answer

And another. Check out the Priestess shirt on the guitarist.

End of Level Boss

From EOLB's MySpace page: Sounds are being moulded, inverted, re-arranged... A fusion of twisted-progressions and burned-out groove... The vision of the End of Level Boss is driven by a complete and all-consuming need for riffs. It has encaptured four humanoids to feed it or die. Under its grasp they themselves have fallen slave to the sounds and are sentenced to spend thier waking hours scavaging the earths for new riffs.
Give their MySpace tracks a listen as well; some good stuff there.

End of Level Boss - Inside the Earth Terminal

UNKLE

Ian Atsbury from The Cult doing the vocals for UNKLE.

UNKLE - Burn My Shadow

This track gives me the willies for some reason. It features the vocals of Thom Yorke.

UNKLE - Rabbit in your Headlights

Atomic Bitchwax

The Atomic Bitchwax. Screwy name, great song.

The Atomic Bitchwax - So Come On

Fu Manchu

Some new Fu. Manchu, that is. If you like Fu Manchu's sound, you won't be disappointed. From their site: from sunny california; music so good you will explode!

Fu Manchu - Hung Out To Dry

Asbestos Death

Here is some Asbestos Death. This is pre-Sleep, with Matt Pike of High on Fire on guitar.

Los Natas

Here is a pretty good band from Argentina. The first 45 seconds is a bit noisy, but it finishes up nice. Dale Crover is rumored to have played a bit with these guys, too.

Tuesday, November 13, 2007

This is horrible.

Sorry about this. This is time you will never get back. Chimgam.

Oh, Jebus. This is bad, too. HelicopterGame.

Aphex Twin

For the uninitiated, I will break you in to Aphex Twin slowly. These videos go from a little odd, straight through to plain weird. For those that have already experienced Richard James, enjoy. If you like the video portion, check out the director, Chris Cunningham.

Aphex Twin - Donkey Rhubarb

Aphex Twin - Windowlicker (NSFW for Language)

Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy

And now to complete the quad of weird, I give you Rubber Johnny.

Aphex Twin - Rubber Johnny

If you can, imagine a real human playing the drum part of Come to Daddy. If you can't imagine that, watch this:

Hurra Torpedo

These guys are gods. This is the best version of Total Eclipse of the Heart ever. Period. I know it's old, but it is worth revisiting.

Songza

Songza is a cool site that lets you search for and play songs right in your browser. I think that all of the audio comes from Youtube videos. Inside the left click pop up menu, you have the option to add the song to a playlist (I don't know if there is an option for more than one). Sharing options in that same menu include linking, embedding, emailing and watching it on Youtube. You also have the option to rate the recording as thumbs up or thumbs down. On the right side of the screen there are links to a Google search page for Discography and Buy for the track that is currently playing. The audio seems to be what you would expect from Youtube videos; not always great, not always horrible, but not bad for being free.

DJ Sara and DJ Ryusei

Damn. These kids are good for their age. Hell, they're probably good for my age.

DJ Sara and DJ Ryusei

Gonzalez - Dusted

I know next to nothing about these guys other than I like the song.

Gonzalez - Dusted

Slo-Mo Heaven featuring DJ Earworm

DJ Earworm mashing up Dolly Parton's Stairway to Heaven with Laurie Anderson, Pat Benatar, Beastie Boys, Art of Noise and probably some others as well. If you're into the whole mashup thing, Dj Earworm is your guy.

A song about pooping?

I am confused, is this a song about pooping? The 80's were awesome, so much hair, so little time.
E-limination! (makes the devil horns hand signal).

Overkill - Elimination

Baroness

I just got The Red Album by Baroness. Go pick it up. It is hard to find live video with decent audio, but this is fairly close.

Bonnie Prince Billy

Will Oldham's Bonnie Prince Billy.

This song gives me about three kinds of goose bumps.
Cursed Sleep

Anyone that can work with Hamony Korine is all right by me.
Workhorse

Just odd.

Black Sabbath - Faires Wear Boots 1970

Here is a little something that helped start the whole Stoner Rock thing. It's good to remember the roots of it all, helps to keep the new stuff in perspective.

NPR Music - Beta

This is pretty cool. NPR Music Beta has live concerts on demand, studio sessions and interviews. There seems to be a pretty impressive list of artists, I can only imagine that it will just keep getting bigger.

The Project Song section of All Songs Considered looks to be fairly interesting as well. Each artist is given two days and a studio with which to make a song.

High on Fire - Rumors of War

Since I've already had a couple of Sleep posts, I'll stick to the theme. Here is Sleep's former guitar player Matt Pike with his three piece High on Fire.

Astroqueen - Crashlander

More from the Swedes. This time it is Astroqueen. This one gets stuck in my head quite often.

After Oz - Vancouver Film School (VFS)

A nice bit of animation from the Vancouver Film School

Om

If you like Sleep, you're gonna dig OM. That would probably be because it is two of the guys from Sleep.

At Giza Part One

At Giza Part Two

Saul Williams

Tell me you can sit still while listening to this. Something about the simple, repetitive music behind him makes this song infectious.

Now for more than five minutes of spoken word by Saul.

Trent Reznor enjoyed having Saul along for a tour so much recently that they decided to record together. It can be downloaded directly from Saul's site.

The Swedes

Who knew Sweden was such a hotbed of great Stoner Rock? I found Truckfighters a few months ago and have been hooked ever since. Check out the vintage Kyuss shirt in the first video!

Here is a video for the song Traffic. It's from their new CD, Phi.

Sleep

I would like to start this blog with the seminal Stoner Rock band Sleep. For a band that started in the early 1990's, their sound is still incredibly pertinent. You've got to love the Laney and Green amps, too.
